Volcano peak silhouetted against the light yellow sky at dawn. Jungle trees and palm leaves frame the volcano.

A Volcano At Sunrise

Imagine a hotel room with this view. This postcard view of the Arenal volcano is what we got when opening our hotel room shutters in the morning.

Arenal is about 100 km (60 miles) north-west of Costa Rica's capital, San José. It's a small town which serves the stream of tourists that arrive for the natural hot springs and related resorts.

Since 2010, the volcano is no longer active — it's 'resting' — so we didn't get a chance to see any activity there. Nor did we get the chance to hike up the volcano. (I guess that means we have an excuse for a return visit.)
