Stubborn and Relentless

I.e., the tree and the tailings.

Does the tree not realize its prospects for success are — shall we say — limited? All the other trees have long since perished. I guess you've got to hand it to the tree though.. In the face of all this toxicity, it's trying to survive.

Now for some criticism and self-loathing... It really bothers me that I cut off the top of the tree. What I wanted was the gritty texture of the ground with the tree alone. If the landscape had had any sort of elevation change I could have brought the horizon to the base of the tree (I tried). It's not quite what I wanted, but it still sort of gets the point across (I hope).
