This particular tailing storage facility consists of a low basin surrounded by berms which is then slowly filled with tailings material. Over time the elevation rises as more and more layers of tailings are deposited into the area. This photo shows one such area in the earlier stages of the process. The trees have started to die as their bases have been covered by the tailings but vegetation still remains. Eventually, they will all die off and the area will look something like this.
