I've got two competing explanations for what these were.
- The fiber was rolled through dyes here in the large tanks. Or,
- From Makers of Many Things, these are vats where the fibres cook and turn over.

I've got two competing explanations for what these were.

These are hollander beaters. Cotton rags that were cut up and treated with caustic soda and reductive bleaching agent in rag boilers were mixed with water in these hollanders. The rag were broken down into fibres by the beater rolls (under the hooded area). The pulp made at this stage was termed half stuff.
