Isometric Ni-Hard Balls

July 1, 2006

Really, really hard iron. Used to grind ore. And so perfectly arranged, too. I'm not sure *where* the grinding is done but it must be a completely chaotic process. I don't remember seeing anything like this at the other generating station.

This is from a ball mill? And why would a generating station be milling ore?

These balls were used for grinding the coal. (as Rufus well knows) Each unit had 5 mills on ground floor to do this.

I believe the balls are hollow .. but the metal is quite thick. They fit between two large heavy rings which have a rounded concave trough. On ring is fixed and the other is gear driven and it turns rolling about 20 or so balls. The coal is crushed to a fine powder and blown out on its way to the burners by a large fan.

There were balls like these at the R.L Hearn too, but were likely the first thing hauled off as scrap before you got there to take pictures. Some of the coal pulverizer mills at both stations did nor use balls. They had large thick tapered rollers in the CE mills. Both types crush the coal to powder and mix it with hot air so it can be blown into the boiler furnace at the numerous burners.
