WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS AN 'OVERSPEED GOVERNOR' , FOR THE ELEVATOR CAB .
JT is correct this is also referred to as a centafudge brake. If the cab should start to excellerate too rappidely the two "balls" will move in an outward direction . This action will apply spring loaded mecanical bracks installed on the cab that will stop the cab from free falling even if all cable are cut......The exact same system is installed today . The more things change the more they stay the same.Dave
