We went back last week. As I stood in this spot, the wind and snow were relentless. We didn't venture any further and will wait for spring to return.
I was a lidman at the Granite City Steel Coke Ovens for 7 months this is the first actual photo of a battery I have seen I can't tell you how surreal it is to see it abandoned with veg. growing... incredible
This has to be # 7 or # 8 battery at Lacakawanna. The tall building in the background is the storage bin for ground coal that would be dropped into a car that would run up and down on the rails shown in the photo and would stop at each oven to load with coal.
Yep,,,it would get really cold up there in the middle of winter
