Bearing the Cold

Bearing the Cold (Colour)

October 18, 2005

On our way home, Jenn and I decided to head down to Lake Ontario near sunset the other day. The Toronto skyline looked quite nice but hey, what's the need for yet another skyline shot at sunset? So I took a few of Jenn while she wasn't looking. If you can't imagine it from the photo, it was cold. Windy. Cold.

I had a tough time choosing between this black & white version and the colour version. While I like the colour, I think it's a little less dramatic. Thoughts anyone?

The sky and the water have nice colors, but the b^w makes it look more chilly...

the colour one is nice but in b/w it shifts the focus entirely on Jenn instead of just the beautiful colours and the scenery. I like this better.

yah i can see where you had trouble choosing...the sky and the water really do have some beautiful colors and i loved them, but i like the b&w cuz the focus is shifted more on jenn...*so i'm basically saying what kathy and "the other, other mike" are saying...* if there was only the scenery then yah, stick w/the color, but since jenn's in it, the b&w was the best choice i think...good job once again!

looking back at the color one, there's a rainbow in there! in the b&w it's just a white line...i never knew that it would do that in a b&w...that's so stinkin cool!!!

I like the b&w, much more focus on the person in the photo, which I like.

ancestral stupidity, i'll say.

it almost looks like jenn's been photoshopped into one of those motivational posters. excellent work, and you're right about the black and white.

and it's COLOR! i spelled it with a U in second grade on a spelling test and the teacher made fun of me for it. damn catholic schools.

I like this one! I agree with both Kathy, and the other, other mike on this one. The colo(U)r photo is beautiful too, but it all depends on what you want to portray. Coldness speaks loudly in this b/w, while also focusing on Jenn.

Oct 17, 2005 at 10:55 pm

I like the color! It's very dramatic.

I think the coloUr one is a nice picture in itself, but I agree with the commenters above. In B&W it's more focussed on her and it does feel colder.

My favourite thing about the colour version is that light on her hair, but it looks warm so it is a little distracting from the point you make in the text.

Both images are quite nice. I prefer the color image for its richness.

I agree with many of the comments in that the B&W does bring your focus on Jen. In my opinion, the B&W also helps convey the coldness of the day. When I compared the two, the B&W made me feel "chilly" while the color shot just made me feel like "nice autumn sky".

I love this picture. You do a great job capturing life.

The B&W ought to be on a Greeting Card
"Whenever you are away from me I only think of you"

There is such a peaceful solitude; a time for a moments quiet reflection. This is a photo to frame & hang in the library.

The color is inviting primarily by the way the sun warms Jenn's hair & back. This pic really comes alive in color.

Well, the rainbow is much more effective in colour, of course. I think it would be great if you could keep the colour of the whole photo, but make Jenn in b/w.

Oct 18, 2005 at 7:48 am

I'm in agreement with the B&W crowd - it does make the day colder and lonelier. The warm colours of the sunset create a different mood altogether.

I prefer the B&W. It emphasizes the structure of the photo: the clouds seem to be tending to a distant vanishing point to the left on the horizon, right where she is looking. This is sharply contrasted by the vertical ribbing in her sweater. At the risk of infecting viewers with this...The end of the wooden plank (bench?) looks like a TV remote control in Jenn's hand, like she is changing the channels in the sky.

I think the color photo is much better. I love the color on Jen's hair how it contrasts the lake... mmm

Black and white all the way, this is something id find in the art museum or something, wonderful backround, id love if you took this with me and this kinda backround. Id definitly get more requests on myspace! Haha but overall an amazing picture. The horizon is breathtaking

I love the black & white, wouldn't even think about using the color photo. Very nice.

I like color photo since it's more dramatic

hehehe... quite the diverse crowd on what they think is "the better" shot. I personally agree that the black and white adds to the whole scene of "Bearing the Cold" since the warm colors of the color picture lessen that effect I have to go with the Black and White. I do like the orange in her hair and the bright colors of the color version (how many times can I say color in this reply?) but for the purpose of making it seem "colder" I'd go with Black and White... (I surly did ramble quite a bit didn't I...?)

Now normally I would have said I prefer the black and white, but in this instance I would say the colour shot hits me more, although tough choice K!! The seascape becomes a bit lost and incidental in b&w. The weak wintery dusk setting Jenn's hair alight is really rich, and the theres more of a sense of great wide open space in colour, providing more of a contrast with the figure in the foreground. I can almost feel that bone chilling breeze blowing out to sea, but a beautiful October sky like that lets you ignore lots of discomfort!

Oct 18, 2005 at 6:13 pm

I like the B&W better.

I like the colour version better...the light on her hair is more dramatic...

Nothing has been said that I wouldn't be duplicating, but I still want to say great shot. While the colour is really nice, I think the B&W works better in the context you give.

Oct 18, 2005 at 10:50 pm

Either way she looks cold.!
Maybe try the colour version using flaming pear contrast , I have used it many times and really makes a acoloured pic extra special.
b/w works well though, just keep both!

Btw the queen english where it all began is spelled COLOUR , not the yankee way .lol
In Australia its CULLA!!!! Kidding.

Hey Kendall they are both great but I prefer the b/w only because Jenn is not as defined in the color. I had made my mind up before I saw the color but Really had to think about it after I saw the color. I agree about the greeting card but it should say Being away from you can't even be soothed by a sky this great. Your always on my mind.

i love both of them! the colour one is so vibrant, yet the b/w is so dramatic and crisp... i guess it depends on what kind of mood i'm in to pick a favorite. i think right now i like the colour shot better, (but tomorrow my opinion may be different).

i'm a sky photographer myself and i must say this photo is great. and the 'no colours - more living composure' kind of art impress even more.well done, kendall.

I really like the BW one... kind of feels like everything's frozen in time. The colour one is nice but it kind of takes away the... stillness or.. the cold feeling.

This is a beautiful shot! You can almost feel the cool breeze.
I used to live near Lake Ontario but on the NY side.

ya, today i like the b/w one better.

(colour does have a U in it, unless you live in the States. it has nothing to do w/catholic schooling, it has to do with the fact that canada was part of the british monarchy, and the u.s. was not. the states still can't even attempt to adopt the metric system, for crying out loud! do you think they'd actually spell colour with a U? ... or 'cheque', for that matter?)

How do I decide?? I love the B&W--dramatic and COLD! It makes me want to give Jenn my shawl. However, the colors in the "colour" version are so warm and inviting that the pic would have to be re-named. Jenn looks more chilly than cold in the color version, and I love the rainbow. If I were to hang one of them on my wall, it would have ot be the color version.

while they are both realy great shots, the b&w seems more captivateing plus the shot seems to have more life than it does in color.

No contest. the B&W has drama and grit. the color is just another color photo. And the colors are too vibrant.
I like your framing very much. the way you've framed the image makes me feel like I'm there. very nice.

I also prefer the b/w- the color one is almost too much- like the old technicolor films- away from the "real" in the opposite direction- have to agree- b/w puts you in her head, color is just a really nice picture- maybe my brain just doesn't have enough power to get past the color to the story....?
