A steel plate (from the ship being dismantled) torn, or cracked.
There probably won't be an update for another day or two... hopefully I'll have some interesting photos to explain when I get back.
Update May 29 2005: I've put a small gallery of photos online from this visit to a shipbreaking yard in Port Colborne.

ITS AMAZING THAT EVERYDAY YOU CAN TAKE SUCH BEAUTIFUL PICTURES
This one really gets me thinking about Burtynsky's Nickel Tailings. You've really demonstrated your keen eye in this shot.
Very nice. Feeling better?
This is excellent. On the RSS feeder, I thought you started taking pictures of streams :) Whew! This is much better.
it's so amazing that a old building like that is still stands up in Rome.
it is the most beautiful buiding in rome. But also the bloodiest
I didn't realize Rome was now resting in southern Ontario in the form of a junked boat...
Great capture! The composition with the crack works very well - the object isn't immediately recognizable as a delapidated boat.
Great perspective!
looks like a satellite photo of a river. excellent work.

Did you move to Rome and not tell me? :-) Great shot.... lucky you - the ship/boat is amazing...
Good perspective and it's that wonderful rust! (can't get enough of the stuff!)
